Machiavelli a genius or a heretic?
Biodiesel is an important development for the environment but Machiavelli’s thoughts on politics were important for the development of human history.
I would like to say that Machiavelli’s arguments can and have been interpreted differently by different readers, but one thing that cannot be denied to the author is that he is very systematic and thorough about explaining how a prince should hold on to his power. Put morals aside, the advices provided indeed look reasonable and the historic examples used to support those advices give greater credibility to the Florentine’s work. Making a bit of an extravagant comparison I would compare Machiavelli to an architect and his book to a blueprint. I made that connection because to erect a stable building you need to follow the instructions in the blueprint, which is very similar to Machiavelli’s indication that if a prince wants to establish his power in the country and attain riches and glory he should follow the advices provided in the book. Another connection I could make is that, the same way the success of a construction project depends on the qualities and aptitude off the architect who executes the plan, the success of the prince in ruling is dependent on his prowess. The true greatness of ‘The Prince’ and its author lies in the fact that, regardless of the book being written so long ago, it is still a subject of discussion and inspiration for people who aspire in the field of politics.
I am sure that any one who is interested in the field of politics can acknowledge the importance of Nicolo Machiavelli and his thoughts towards the better understanding of problems and actions of political actors. Even nowadays some politicians can be regarded as followers of Machiavelli.
